##ArmedPolice in NSW schools
Armed police have been brought into NSW schools toreduce crime rates and educate students. The 40 School Liaison Police (SLP)officers have been allocated to public and private high schools across thestate.
Organizers say the officers, who began work lastweek, will build positive relationships between police and students. But parentgroups waned of potential dangers of armed police working at schools incommunities where police relations were already under strain.
Among their duties, the SLPs will conduct crimeprevention workshops, talking to students about issues including shoplifting, offensive behavior, graffiti and drugs and alcohol. They can also advise schoolprincipals. One SLP, Constable Ben Purvis, began work in the inner Sydneyregion last week, including at Alexandria Park Community School’s senior campus. Previouslystationed as a crime prevention officer at The Rocks, he now has 27 schoolsunder his jurisdiction in areas including The Rocks, Redfern and Kings Cross.
Constable Purvis said the full-time position wouldsee him working on the broader issues of crime prevention.“I am not a security guard,” he said. “I am not there to patrol theschool. We want to improve relationships between police and schoolchildren, tohave positive interaction. We are coming to the school and giving themknowledge to improve their own safety." The use of fake ID among olderstudents is among the issues he has already discussed with principals. Parents'groups responded to the program positively, but said it may spark a range ofcommunity reactions. "It is a good thing and an innovative idea and therecould be some positive bene?ts," Council ofCatholic School Parents executive officer Danielle Cronin said. "Differentcommunities will respond to this kind of presence in different ways.

##Napping
A large new study hasfound that people who regularly took a siesta were significantly less likely todie of heart disease. "Taking a nap could turn out to be an importantweapon in the fight against coronary mortality(冠心病的死亡率)," said Dimitrios Trichopoulos of theHarvard School of Public Health in Boston, who led the study published yesterdayin the Archives(档案) of Internal Medicine. The study ofmore than 23,000 Greek adults - the biggest and best examination of the subjectto date - found that those who regularly took a midday siesta were more than 30percent less likely to die of heart disease. Other experts said the results areintriguing(迷人的). Heart disease kills more than 650,000Americans each year, making it the nation's No. 1 cause of death. "It'sinteresting. A little siesta, a little snooze may be beneficial," saidGerald Fletcher, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla.,speaking on behalf of the American Heart Association. "It's simple, but ithas a lot of promise."

I’m 43 years old and I owe tens ofthousands of dollars in student loans. Oh sure, I knew the loans were piling upas I went through school. But with one loan coming from here, another fromthere, I had no idea of the rock slide that was building. Fifteen years later,I still experience moments of sheer horror regarding my family’s financial situation. My monthly student loan payment is more thantriple my car payment. OK, so without my college degree, I would not have beenable to get my current job. For that I'm grateful; but at what cost? My loanshave been accruing at a rate of 10 percent, and now they have burgeoned to—well. I’m an English major, you do the math.I don’t think they’ll ever getpain off. We’re in debt way past our eyeballs, andthere’s no hope in sight. I’mbeing kept in class—a financial class of graduateswhose only hope for attending college meant borrowing money from thegovernment. Because of our mounting credit card debt and monthly payments thatfar exceed our family’s income, my kids will also jointhe class of citizens who can^ rely on their parents for college support. Do Iwish I’d chosen another educational route? You bet.
